The Story Behind Our Astronomy Club
WHO ARE WE?
Punarvasu is the Astronomy Club of the Department of Physics at the Dolphin (PG) Institute of Biomedical and Natural Sciences, Dehradun . Punarvasu is the astrological name for the stars Castor and Pollux of the Gemini constellation , considered as Nakshatras in Indian astrology . While we acknowledge how far astrology and astronomy have come now , we also wanted to highlight their common origin . Astronomy, a pure science , emerged as a result of wishful practices of ancients to relate astronomical events with their lives.Â
Out of all the nakshatras, we chose Punarvasu, because Castor and Pollux symbolize the the spirit of astronomy . There is more to it than it meets the eye. Castor, seen as a single bright star in the night sky , is actually three binaries in a gravitationally bound system, hidden away from our eyes unless we have a decent telescope to look into the depth of space Pollux is a red giant star and the brightest star of Gemini . Gemini itself is a constellation that goes back to Ptolemy's time, is a zodiac (meaning lies on the ecliptic ) and shows brotherhood and love. the rocket in our logo represents our curiosity to explore by breaking free of the chains that temporarily restrict our curiosities , to learn more about our origin and the Universe. The whole logo is circular in shape as circle was seen as the perfect shape in ancient times .
We look forwards to sharing this exciting journey of exploration and astonishment with you that would come through our mutual love for space.Â
Keep Looking Up!
